Deans roundtable discusses technology and innovation for cities COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog Dean Merit E. Janow convened leading technology entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and experts in urban policy to discuss the application of digital technology and advanced data analytics to improve urban environments around the world.The event was co-hosted by Silicon Valley entrepreneur Joe Lonsdale, co-founder of Palantir and founder of Addepar, among other companies, and set the stage for the launch of the Dean’s Public Policy Challenge Grant Program, which is seeking proposals from SIPA and other Columbia students for innovative projects using technology and data to address global urban challenges. The Program aims to integrate problem-solving from different fields such as public policy, computer science, and engineering. Daniel Doctoroff, the CEO and president of Bloomberg and a former deputy mayor of New York City recounted examples of the ways in which New York City’s Office of Policy and Strategic Planning â€" also known as the city’s “geek squad” â€" used data to solve problems, like how to identify restaurants that were illegally dumping grease and clogging the city’s sewers. By using information about restaurants that were not contracting with waste disposal companies to eliminate grease, the geek squad overlayed a map of those restaurants with geospatial data that identified areas with concentrated grease in the sewage system. This resulted in a 95 percent success rate in identifying and stopping the illegal dumping of grease from restaurants. This example underlined how data is an increasingly important tool for government, not only to solve problems but also to reduce costs â€" a sentiment echoed by other speakers at the roundtable. Jeffrey Sachs, director of the Earth Institute, cited crises in employment, education, healthcare, and energy as problems that needed prioritizing in the United States, and expressed his hope that advanced technology would be used to improve efficiency in those areas. He stressed that data and technology should be used for good governance. Open governance should allow for active public participation. Along a similar vein, Carter Cleveland, CEO of Artsy, an online platform connecting users to works of art, said he would like to see more open-source information that allowed joint ownership of data between the government and the public. Cleveland said access to information could empower civilians to participate and partner with government to monitor crime and improve urban safety, for example, whereas information asymmetry could erode cooperation between citizens and governing bodies. Patricia Culligan, associate director of the Institute for Data Science and Engineering and co-director of the Earth Institute’s Urban Design Lab, advocated for the meshing of technology and policy around urban infrastructure. She said more investment was needed to improve infrastructure providing for the safety, lives and needs of cities, and to address manageable challenges like reducing energy consumption. A study she led at Columbia, she noted, found that transparency and sharing data about energy use with residents of a building helped reduce consumption by up to 30 percent. Panelists seemed to agree that the role of information and communications technology (ICT) and data was increasingly important in helping cities become more responsive, more sustainable, safer, and healthier. The challenge was to catalyze innovations and encourage multi-disciplinary, multi-sector solutions. However, cautioning that governments don’t work like businesses, Rohit Aggarwala, professor of professional practice in international and public affairs at SIPA and expert on urban sustainability, said the key was to identify areas where there is a lack of timely or useful data and fill that gap where the government already has the mandate and resources to act. Frankenstein says the creature bounded over the crevices in the ice, among which I walked with caution. Frankenstein here is trying to disassociate himself from the creature and say hes nothing like him. There is lots of words associated with awful majesty and swelled. This is all associated with the size of the creature and how much the mountains and out is how much the creature stands out. Frankenstein says its unearthly ugliness rendered it almost too horrible for human eyes. This is saying the creature is not human and makes the reader think he is a monster. Shelley presents the creature as a monster at this point to contrast a different point of view. This is to make sure that the reader doesnt feel too much sympathy towards the creature or else they would be biased towards it and take away their understanding of the story.  This is different from today because disfigured people today are not treated this way. There still may be some hostility towards them, but theyre not thought of as freaks or cast out of society or ridiculed anymore. This could show that the creatures actually human and can control his temper, or it could be that the creature realises that being alive with no-one is worse than death and he wants Frankenstein to suffer like he has.  We feel sorrow for the creature because he has been rejected all through his life because even at birth he said he felt half frightened. This length of rejection provides some reasoning as to his behaviour in the later parts of his life. Mary Shelley puts the creatures story in because this gives us some insight into how the creature feels. The creatures story from pages 98 129 is written as a monologue. This is significant because this makes the creature seem even more isolated because hes telling the story all on his own.  The creature says Darkness then came over me and troubled me. This makes the creature seem unlike a monster because monsters and evil are normally associated with the dark. Next, the creature sat down and wept. This makes the reader feel deep compassion towards the creature because hes obviously upset. Even today in modern society when a man cries we think that something really bad must have happened because men arent supposed to cry. Its seen as weak so this makes the creature seen weak also. We also feel sympathy for the creature because he said sometimes I tried to imitate the pleasant songs of the bird but was unable,the inarticulate sounds which broke from me frightened me into silence again.  Trying to make sounds of the birds make him seem gentle. Kenner shows the viewers that chickens are genetically altered to grow twice the size they should in a shorter time span like the salmon. The only problem with this is that the chickens body gets too heavy for them to support so most of them die because of starvation. The film didnt show the viewer what really happens to the dead hens, it only show the owner pile them up. For all the viewers know the food companies can be coming back to the farm to collect the dead chickens and use the meat anyways. It sounds reasonable due to the fact that Tyson declined to be interviewed in the film and by doing so the viewers know that the company is hiding something they dont want to reveal to the public. The thing consumer like about the article is that it talks about saving money. Now in this economy its better to save than to spend. Most Americans spend about $1 50 to $250 on food for the week. Because of GMOs they might be saving a little bit more oney. Now the bad thing is that prices would go up by a small percentage in corn and soybeans. The consumers know this so unless they really need these products, theyll stay away from purchasing them at their locar market. The labeling will eventually catch on in other markets such as Costco, Target, Safeway, etc. , so by reading the labels, consumers will know exactly what is in the product and they can determine whether they need it or not. When viewers watch Food Inc. it makes them think twice about going out to eat at a fast food restaurant. With that said, they will save money because the average American goes out to eat at least 3 times a week. After watching the film, they will have a sense about where the food at the local McDonalds really comes from. The advertisements say things like fresh from our farm but in reality the meat comes from an assembly line rather than a farm. For example, on highway 5 heading to Los Angeles, California; There is a so called farm on the left hand side. It looks nothing like a farm. The cows are all bunched up, theyre covered in dirt and their own feces. Its more of an industry, the cows Just go there to be slaughtered for their meat and sold to restaurants. If Americans care about animals like they say they do, then they will have a sense to stop eating out at fast food places that alter the meat. All in all, Nine things had stronger facts on the subjects compared to Food Inc because the article only talked about the positives of GMOs. Food Inc. indeed talked about positives as well but it brought itself to a disadvantage by talking about the negatives such as false advertisement and contaminated meat.
